Ploughing Day
By Ploughing Day (14.04), all ploughing tools had to be fit and in good working order, because on that day work in the fields began. "On Ploughing Day, the ploughing had to be done, said the people in Halliste, although in Karksi they claim: "In the ancient times, the farmers used to plough on Ploughing Day, but now you cannot even see a piece of bare land on that day." The first plougher was watered, just as the first person tending the cattle. To compensate for this, the wet plougher was given boiled eggs. It was also customary to lift up and touch all agricultural implements on Ploughing Day, so work would go well and the person working would not be sleepy.
